Hidden blades are a type of melee weapon that has been around since antiquity. They're the most iconic and well-known weapons from Assassin's Creed, but they were around long before the video game franchise. They're typically constructed with a long blade housed in a sheath or hidden compartment in an accessory such as a cane, walking stick, belt buckle, or ring.
However, there are blade variations made from other types of weapons such as shuriken. The design of these blades comes in many different forms and has varied greatly throughout history. They may resemble a dagger with a long, thin handle that hides the edge when it's retracted.
Another variation is a hollowed-out ring or bracelet that conceals a small bladed weapon like a straight razor or needle-tipped acupuncture dart. Other designs are unique and consist of secret compartments that can be accessed when the accessory is opened (kimonos, fans, umbrellas) or something entirely outside the box (like the spring-loaded wristband).
The Best Hidden Blades:
There are all kinds of blades: long, short, dual-sided knives with a variety of serrated edges and sharp angles designed for cooking. But not all blades are created equal. And while we may not be able to recommend the best blade for chopping potatoes or slicing onions (although this one is pretty good), we can steer you in the direction of the five best hidden blades:
1. Brass Knuckle Knife:
This is a great knife for general all-purpose use. Its unique design offers a high degree of protection while still being strong enough to cut through basic materials like plastic and rubber. The brass knuckle design means that the blade can be activated easily, without the need to pull it out and then push it back in.
2. Karambit:
The first thing you'll notice about this knife is its weird shape and curved blade. There are numerous benefits to this design, including the fact that it hangs close to your arm in order for runners to carry it in their pockets or on their wrist at all times, because there's barely any metal on its body (3/16 of an inch).
The blade itself is made of hardened steel with a serrated edge, which makes it ideal for slicing through things like soft fruit and vegetables. The handle also provides excellent grip while still remaining quite comfortable.
3. Belt Buckle Knife:
This is a great knife for those runners who need to carry it in their belt. It's small, lightweight, and extremely durable. The blade has a special sharpening process that can make it stand up to aggressive use (like running), while also being well suited for general tasks like cutting up apples and vegetables. It's also very simple to put on your belt: simply wrap the belt around the buckle, buckle it, and then reach down into your pants pocket until you feel the hidden knife against your thigh.
4. Small Blade Knife:
This is the perfect method for stashing a knife in a variety of places. There are three versions of this blade, but the basic design works well for any situation that requires stealth. The blade is able to lock into place, which means you can carry it in your hand without fear of having it fall out (it's not going anywhere). This means that you can run with it, kick a ball around with it, or just lay around without getting worried about losing your knife.
5. Pen Knife:
These hidden blades are a great choice if you need a knife that is small and unobtrusive. The blade is sharp enough for utility work while short enough for everyday carrying. The handle fits well in your hand, which makes it easy to grip when the situation calls for it.
Hidden Blades are a Great Choice for Self-Defense!
The blade feature was initially invented in the late 17th century by Le Chevalier de Lapin, who had invented the concealed pocket knife; this knife could not be pulled out of the handle but had to be pressed together and then pressed against a victim's ribs to make it apparent that a weapon was at hand. The attacker could either stab or slash with the concealed knife.
The first purely concealed knives were developed in 1891 by Polish Lieutenant Henryk Szeliga who designed and patented a dagger with an embedded blade secreted inside a hilt. Hidden blades are knives that can be concealed on your person. This type of knife has a blade, usually shorter than other knives. They are typically used for stabbing, hitting, and slashing weapons.
The blade is meant to get little to no contact with the target so as to not cause damage, but only enough to startle them into fleeing or knock them down in order to escape without major physical harm. The name for the weapon comes from their location: most are designed with a blade that slides out of the handle like a traditional folding pocket knife where they remain hidden until ready for use.
